BioScavenger (SkQ1)
BioScavenger contains SkQ1 (often marketed as Visomitin) a mitochondria-targeted antioxidant also known as 10-(6′-plastoquinonyl)decyltriphenylphosphonium. Its triphenylphosphonium “address tag” is designed to drive accumulation in mitochondria, where a lot of cellular reactive oxygen species are generated.
In research, the central idea is targeted redox modulation at the mitochondrial membrane, rather than broad, untargeted antioxidant activity. Visomitin has been developed and studied mainly in ocular contexts where mitochondrial oxidative signaling is implicated in tissue stress. For research use only.
